What is one thing that you remember most from a film? Maybe the characters, specific quotes, or perhaps the central theme? I believe The Doobie Brothers said it best with “Woah, oh listen to the music, all the time.” For me having a fantastic soundtrack in conjunction with your film makes for a quality movie. I have noticed that most movies that have been successful usually have a soundtrack to go along with it. When you hear Rascal Flatts “Life is a Highway”, do you not connect the song to the Disney movie Cars? Or maybe when you hear “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee, can you not help but think of the Marvel film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. While looking at popular films just within the past decade, most of them have included a soundtrack with various famous artists.

One example of a movie that not only gave us an amazing film but an amazing soundtrack as well is Black Panther. The soundtrack for the 2018 superhero film, based on the Marvel Comic, consists of an original score composed by Ludwig Göransson and original songs produced by Kendrick Lamar. According to Wikipedia, after reading the film’s script, Göransson traveled to Africa to research traditional African music for the film. Göransson’s score was released as Black Panther (Original Score) by Hollywood Records, receiving praise for being unique among Marvel Cinematic Universe scores due to the incorporation of traditional African elements along with thematic material. Lamar’s soundtrack was released as Black Panther: The Album by Interscope Records. It was very successful with large sells, including the top position on the Billboard 200 chart. According to Wikipedia, the soundtrack won “Best Original Score” at the Academy Awards and the Grammy Awards. The song “King’s Dead” from Lamar’s album also won a Grammy.

In conclusion, I always take The Doobie Brothers advice, “listen to the music” while watching movies. I think movie soundtracks are a great way to connect with a film while you are viewing it, as well as a way to connect with the film afterward. Quality films tend to have a quality soundtrack. These quality soundtracks in films, results in the ability to enjoy aspects of a movie after actually watching the film. Having the ability to connect with any kind of film after watching it makes a quality film.
